<span lang="EN-GB">Today I wanted to
spotlight <a href="http://www.superdrug.com/b-is-for-beautiful/about-b/page/about_b">B.</a>, a brand that I’ve been enjoying recently. This brand is only available in Superdrug and
is a Leaping Bunny/BUAV brand company. B. states all
their products are suitable for vegans, but I haven’t emailed the company asking about the particulars of this. I wanted to get this post out soon because, as
of writing this, everything is 50% off so if you’re interested you should head
to Superdrug! <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<span lang="EN-GB">Overall, I’m
really enjoying this collection. However
like most other brands, they don’t have any BB creams or concealers light
enough for my skin tone. This is disappointing
but not surprising. Most of their
products are also very shimmery so if this isn’t your style perhaps check them
out in store before purchasing.
Superdrug has samples out for almost all of these products.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

before, but this product is amazing.
Since moving to London, I’ve been breaking out much more often, and I’m
still not sure why. I got a sample of
this with my first B. purchase and had to buy the full size bottle after trying
it. I use this as a toner after I’ve
cleansed my face. It has helped heal my existing
blemishes and stopped any new ones popping up in a matter of days. It is brilliant! have ever owned, and I’m enjoying it.
Like all other cream eye shadows you need to use a thin layer, but even
when this does crease on me, it isn’t bad at all. It is very shimmery without the chunky
glitter vibe, and I love how it adds some light to my eyes. The Superdrug I was in offered a decent
selection of colours as well. <a href="http://www.superdrug.com/b/b-stunning-vibrant-eye-shimmer-lizzie-192/invt/704857&bklist" target="_blank">[Link]</a><o:p></o:p></span></div>

lacking any colour there. I just picked
this up as it is an easy to wear colour for me.
Plus is it buildable so I can alter how much I apply depending on how my
cheeks are. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/"><span id="goog_985944855"></span>[Link]<span id="goog_985944856"></span></a><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Smokey Soft, blendable Kohl Eyeliner in 100 Black<br />
</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> For the past few years, I’ve used
eye shadow to line my eyes rather than eyeliner. However, I picked this up as I’ve been
thinking of getting back into the eyeliner game. This is a seriously soft kohl so I need to be
careful to use only a small amount. Even
then, I need to clean up afterwards as there is a lot of transfer and smudging. That being said, this would be wonderful for
a smokey eye, but for everyday, it’s a bit too all over the place and hard to
use for tight lining without a lot of transfer.
I’ve been using this lightly under my eye shadow liner for some added
definition. <a href="http://www.superdrug.com/b/b-smokey-soft-blendable-kohl-eyeliner-black-100/invt/493255&bklist=" target="_blank">[Link]</a><o:p></o:p></span><br />

</span><span lang="EN-GB" style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> I also got a little box of samples
for a penny with my first purchase. I
don’t think Superdrug is giving these out anymore, but it was a nice
surprise. Inside was the Micellar Water
discussed above, B. Active Day Cream (which I have not tried yet), B. Radiant
Rejuvenating Serum, B. Stunning Vibrant Eye Shimmer in 057 Copper, and a lipstick
in 054 Eton Mess. Oh and an expired coupon. Everything is very
shimmery including the serum. The serum
felt nice on, but there was only enough for one application so I can’t speak to
its effectiveness. The lipstick was nice
and moisturizing as well although the colour and levels of shimmer aren’t my
personal preference.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

My only makeup purchase since arriving in

but it is a bit too dark and slightly orange although I can blend it in
well. For reference, I was NW15 in MAC
foundations. I usually add a tiny bit of
a lighter BB cream I own (but reserve for special occasions) to perfect the
shade.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB"> Sorry for my long and unannounced

I would like add that since my earlier posts are going on three years now, I would encourage everyone to double check this information. Most of the brands I discuss are Leaping Bunny approved, so the easiest course of action would simply be to compare my information against Leaping Bunny's current list.<br />
<br />
I would like to welcome any newcomers (Hi!) and guide you towards my <a href="http://rswack.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/guide-for-sending-and-interpreting.html" target="_blank">Guide for Sending and Interpreting Animal Testing Emails</a> which can help you with your own research and discusses my cruelty free standards which have no changed. Also check out my post <a href="http://rswack.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/what-does-cruelty-free-mean.html" target="_blank">What Does Cruelty Free Mean?</a> which is a handy guide to all the terminology people throw around.<br />
<br />
My Cruelty Free Standards:<br />
1) A company can not test ingredients and finished products on animals.<br />
2) A company can not hire a third party to animal test ingredients or finished products.<br />
3) A subsidiary can not be owned by a company that tests ingredients or finished products or contracts a third party to do so.<br />
4) A company can not sell in China or any other country that reserves the right to animal test products sold there (I know there is some talk of things changing in China but nothing definite yet)</div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Hello, Everyone! As you have most likely already guessed, the
absence of posts has been due to my crazy pre-moving schedule. I recently finished my visa application and
am going out of town for a family event before returning and packing my life up
to move to London early September. I
have so much information and correspondence to discuss but simply haven’t had

been enjoying that I wanted to share with you in lieu of original content.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> For
the past few months, I have been rocking some green Manic Panic streaks in my
hair. My experience with Manic Panic
products was different than I anticipated so I’ve decided to do a review of
their Flash Lightning bleach kit and Classic hair dye. Overall, I am happy with the way my hair
turned out but disappointed with the Manic Panic products. Honestly, some of my disappoint stems from my
own lack of research but other issues are inexplicable.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Manic
Panic is a cruelty free company, and all of their dyes and bleaches are vegan
as well as some of their cosmetics. They
label their Classic dyes as semi-permanent, and they have a rather large
variety of unnatural hair colors. Using
this brand was convenient, since unlike my other hair dyes, I could pick all
this up at my local Sally’s, and the bleaching kit included a bowl and brush.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> I
purchased the Flash Lightning 30 bleach kit because, on top of having dark hair,
Manic Panic recommends bleaching your hair first to get a vibrant color. I followed the instruction manual exactly but
had issues. I had a friend help me apply
the bleach from tips up to roots in an even coating. However, within ten minutes the hair at my
forehead and temples was almost completely bleached and the rest of my hair was
still black. I also didn’t realize how
yellow my hair would be after the bleaching process without a toner. Manic Panic’s website and the bleach kit made
it sound as if the kit was all I needed to get a true color so I assumed a toner
or something was in the mix.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> I
colored my hair with Manic Panic’s Classic dye in Midnight Blue. Now you may be thinking ‘Didn’t she say she
had green hair not blue?’ and you would be correct. The yellow in my bleached hair mixed with the
blue dye giving me green hair. I was
happy with my hair eventually, but it is disappointing to spend money only to
have issues with a product that seemed pretty popular.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
thing that has annoyed me the most is this product’s lack of staying
power. I’ve used semi-permanent dyes in
the past, and I would not categorize this dye as semi-permanent. The vibrant color you get is gone after only
two washes (I’m being generous here), and it fades revealing the bleached hair
in less than six washes. It came off on
pillows and stained the floor of my shower, but couldn’t manage to stay in my
hair very long. So little of my hair was
properly bleached that I kept re-dying the small sections as they quickly faded. However, I will <b>not</b> be repurchasing this now that I’ve run out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

baffled as to why this is such a popular hair dye company and wish I had done
more research before purchasing with them as it seems other people had the same
issues.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
know there are many terms that get thrown around in the cruelty free community that
might be slightly ambiguous and confusing.
My mother recently went cruelty free and vegan as well, and I noticed
some of the issues she was having with terms assuming one thing actually meant
another. So today I’m putting together a
little Cruelty Free vocabulary lesson to go over some basic terms.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16.0pt;">Cruelty Free<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Cruelty
free <b>only</b> refers to the testing of
products on animals (anything from rats to monkeys and dogs) usually through
vivisection. Because there is no way for
consumers to learn if a specific product (say your mascara or dish soap) has
been tested on animals, this term usually applies to an entire <b>brand or company</b>.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">What
qualifies as cruelty free is <b>different</b>
to many people. For me, a company should
not animal test ingredients or finished products, not contract another company
to do this for them, not stipulate “unless required by law,” or sell in China
or any other country which requires animal testing of all beauty products. To some people, a product is cruelty free as
long as there is no animal testing of the finished product. Cruelty free does <b>not</b> mean vegan, natural, or anything else although it may also be
these things.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

emailed elf at least twice before without receiving a response which, to say
the least, was annoying. I was happy to

whether their ingredients were vegan or not.
On elf’s FAQ page [<a href="http://www.eyeslipsface.com/faqs" target="_blank">link</a>], seen in the image below, they state all their
ingredients are vegan, but then only discuss beeswax and lanolin. I wanted to confirm that all their
ingredients were vegan not only their lanolin and beeswax replacers. Of course, their animal testing statement was
also very narrow so I wanted to confirm they met all of my cruelty free
requirements.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
was happy to learn that all of elf’s cosmetic ingredients are vegan friendly. However, I was a little surprised that they
sell horse hair brushes. As I discussed
in my Real Techniques post [<a href="http://rswack.blogspot.com/2012/01/are-samantha-chapmans-real-techniques.html" target="_blank">here</a>], synthetic Taklon brushes have numerous
advantages over natural hair brushes. As
always, I don’t believe PETA’s animal testing standards are up to par, so elf’s
association with them is not a plus to me.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
only element of their response that strikes me as controversial is their
relationship with China. They do <b>not</b> sell in China and therefore their
products are <b>not</b> subject to Chinese
government animal testing. However, they
manufacture their products in China making their products extremely inexpensive
and presumably bolstering the Chinese economy.
This distinction is another one of the personal comfort decisions to be
made when deciding what you consider cruelty free. At the moment, I am personally fine with this
as I do not purchase much or often from elf.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Tarte… I’ve never actually purchased any of their products, but I was

collection, it is enough to point out. So BB cream lust led to this email which
I assumed would come back with a clean bill of health. However, I became increasingly incredulous as
I wrote this post.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The number one vegan restaurant in the
country, forget just Seattle, for vegan comfort food is the Wayward Vegan
Café. The Club Sandwich tasted
absolutely amazing, was large enough for two meals, and had a tiny price tag. To help keep prices down you bus your own

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Across the street from the Wayward Café
is Vegan Haven, a small charity store that sells only vegan, cruelty free products. I picked up these Go Max Go brand candy bars
(which do contain palm oil) and my mom got a beautiful wallet there. They truly sell everything from jewelry to
dog food to tampons to food.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I figured I’d eat a lot of falafel in
Israel even though I don’t particularly like falafel. However, the falafel in Israel is
amazing. They fill it up with all kinds
of vegan awesomeness (hummus, tahini, spicy sauce, lettuce, eggplant, cucumber,
tomato, etc.) and french fries! The pita
is the best pita I’ve ever had and has ruined all American pita for me. Don’t get me started on laffa. I miss laffa. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

many salads. I eat salad. I like salad,
but that is not all I want to eat for a month except for three trips to a
falafel stand. Israelis say it must be
so easy to be vegan in Israel, but they are also the people who think vegans
only eat salad. The only Israeli who

I am a lipstick/lip color person when it comes to makeup. OCC not only has an awe inspiring range of
opaque colors but equally amazing reviews.
My communication with OCC occurred in November of 2012, but to my
knowledge there have no been no changes to their animal testing policies or
ownership since then.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I usually include email correspondence in my posts while discussing a company’s

testing on their products. OCC does not
sell in China or any other countries with mandatory animal testing
policies. In addition, this is a <b>100% vegan</b> product company. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

far as I can tell, OCC is still owned by its founder, David Klasfeld <a href="http://www.hollywoodnoirmakeup.com/company-profile-obsessive-compulsive-cosmetics/" target="_blank">[Link]</a>. The FAQ section of their website states that
they are a 100% vegan company not only to raise the bar on what is considered cruelty
free, but also, because animal ingredients are the most common allergens and
skin irritators. Given the back and
forth of a lot of companies recently, this practical reasoning for being vegan
is reassuring <a href="http://www.occmakeup.com/faq.html" target="_blank">[Link]</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I’ll
apologize in advance since this post is probably not applicable to most of my
readers. However, I figured this
platform was best for discussing my experience as a vegan on my Birthright trip
to Israel. Overall, I’m glad I
participated in this experience, but it was a rough ten days for a number of
reasons.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Firstly,
some basics if you have no idea what I’m talking about. Birthright is a program funded mainly through
private donations and some Israeli government money that takes Jews aged 18-26
to Israel for ten days, if they have never visited before or after the age of
12. Obviously there are some expenses
the participant must cover, but these are very small considering airfare,
ground transportation, and accommodation are covered. There is one Birthright program but many
groups that take people on this program.
I went with a URJ Kesher Group (Union for Reform Judaism).</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16.0pt;">Food<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Before
departure, I filled out paperwork stating very exactly what I could not eat as
vegan expecting that simply stating that I was vegan would be confusing. I was told that this information would be
sent to all the appropriate places to make sure my food needs would be taken care
of. I even confirmed this over the phone
during one of my interviews. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">However,
two days out from departure I was talking to my American staff leader for the
first time to clarify what I couldn’t eat and not do because of my vegan values,
and he told me he had received no information on my dietary restrictions. I told him what I had written down
assuming/hoping/expecting him to transfer this information to the appropriate
people since it had obviously failed the original time. Note to you: assume your American staff
actually has no power over anything.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
show up at LAX and, for some reason I can’t remember, it came to my attention
that the program probably hadn’t reserved me meals I could eat on the 13.5 hour
flight. I immediately went up to both
American staff members to figure out what was going on, but they did nothing
besides make excuses. I was told El Al
doesn’t have vegan meals, and it was too late to order a special meal. Well, yes, El Al does have vegan meals
<a href="http://www.elal.co.il/elal/english/allaboutyourflight/beforeyourflight/specialmeals.html" target="_blank">[link]</a>. If they had sent me my flight
information or even told me I had to reserve this meal myself I would have
gladly done it before hand. However, I
was told this would all be done for me. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Other
people in my group with special meals received theirs with no personal
interventions. One girl in my group was
nice enough to give me her vegetarian meal that she ordered even though she
wasn’t vegetarian, but that was only one meal near the end of the flight. The rest of the flight I ate trail mix, the
horrible little airplane salad, and water.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In
Israel, there are vegan options at every meal, but these options are always salad,
hummus, and olives. If I had been able
to eat out more often I could have gotten better food, but the group picks
where you eat, and they like hotel buffets.
On days out, it’s always easy to find a falafel stand or an Aroma, which
clearly marks their vegan items and has an English menu. I even managed to find vegan sorbet at a
mall! If you’re unsure where to go or
what to eat, just ask someone. Don’t
feel bad about passing on challah or anything else.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 16.0pt;">Animals<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Apparently
the highlight of this trip for a lot of participants (I don’t know why) is
riding camels at the Bedouin tents. I
avoid circuses and other industries where animals are used for profit because
they are usually rampant with animal abuse on top of already being
inappropriate environments for the animal (seriously look at all the continual animal
abuse fines for Barnum and Bailey Circus).
The two other vegans in my group decided to ride the camels, but by that
night, confided that they were feeling guilty about it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Just
by looking at the camels, I could tell a few of them and one in particular weren’t
in the best shape. People in my group
asked why I wasn’t riding and seemed generally supportive of my feelings. Later that night we walked into the desert
farther away from the camp but still no more than a 15 minute walk away. In the dark of night, my group quite
literally walked into a camel carcass. I
wouldn’t bet money on this merely being a coincidence.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We
also had an optional excursion on a free Shabbat to walk around a kibbutz. The kibbutz we toured actually turned out to
be in the dairy industry. So we saw the
mother cows caged and wallowing in their own feces and the veal calves chained
up a few feet away. People will make
nasty, uncouth jokes as they try to rationalize that what they’re seeing is
what they’ll be eating later. The
kibbutz also had a greenhouse and other interesting features so it wasn’t a
complete bust for me just not the best choice.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">There
are cats everywhere in Israel.
Seriously, everywhere. Cats are the
Israeli squirrels. You will be tempted
by the cute especially because they look slightly different than cats here. However, everyone will treat you like you’re
crazy if you feed or play with them.
Also be careful because they are feral cats without vaccinations. As my group medic was playing with another
cat, he told me if I got scratched the program wasn’t responsible. I always washed my hands after handling the
cats just in case.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

brought Clif bars with me and it ended up being the smartest thing I could have
done vegan or not. The days are packed
with physical activities and travel and you are (possibly purposely) not given enough
time for a solid night of sleep. Add this
in with only eating salad most of the time and you can see why I was exhausted. These made great snacks while we were out and
about and for my flight out of Israel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

</span></span><!--[endif]--><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In
Israel, people don’t discuss food as vegetarian, paleo, vegan, etc. but rather
in kosher terms. Ask if food is
parve. Parve food doesn’t have meat or
dairy ingredients although it may contain eggs.
Understanding what is vegan anyways, it was easy to avoid eggs. People speak English to varying degrees so
you can ask. However, if I wasn’t sure about
an item from past experience I avoided it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

you stay in Israel after, make sure to go to a market before sundown on

tip: Everyone (man/woman, Israeli/Palestinian, Adult/teenager, Muslim/Jewish/Christian)
will want to talk to you or rather talk at you when they learn you’re foreign
and especially if they think you’re American.
Just listen. Don’t try to have a conversation. I don’t think they actually want an equal
conversation. They just want you to hear

have another post on food from my travels through Israel and Europe coming up

no, I will not be digging into my bank account to purchase these products

eventually trying out their BB cream (Beauty Balm) which is vegan and looks as
though it might be light enough for me.
I’ve heard that Too Faced is cruelty free, but I wanted to double check
especially to make sure the company met my cruelty free standards. So I sent off an email March 6, 2013.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Thank you for contacting us. In answer

for this exact reason of your concern and will not do so as long as it is
required to test on animals. We, like you, feel very strongly about the
well-being of all of our furry friends, and will continue to reflect our
beliefs in all of our behaviors beginning with the creation of our formulas all
the way to the end product and where it is sold. <b>P.S. We are in the process of the

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
European Union ban on animal tested products has survived all its opponents and
is now going into effect! This is
definitely a wonderful milestone for animals and a great accomplishment for our
cruelty free community. The demands to
end animal testing and selective shopping does affect the marketplace. However, let me be realistic and say this
does not mean we can forget about emailing companies and looking for leaping
bunny logos. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">As this is an EU
ban, you can only count on this affecting sales in the European Union for the
moment.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">Hopefully, international
companies will stop animal testing in an effort to make only one kind of
product that can be sold internationally.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">
</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">This may not wind up being the case though.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;"> </span></li>

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">Products can be
sold in the EU if a company does not test its products or ingredients but sells
to a country that tests on its own, such as China.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;"> </span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">In the flurry of
articles on this ban, there have been many articles which include notorious
animal rights abusers as suddenly going cruelty free.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">I am very wary of this and beg everyone to
email these companies to double check before purchasing from them (check out my

<li><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: 0in;">Obviously, those
of use looking for vegan products still need to check ingredient lists since
this ban only affects animal testing.</span></li>

my recent travels, I encountered many people with monstrously huge bags. I was traveling with a group for the first

total of ten days. However, they had
brought humongous suitcases packed full plus a decent sized carry on. I had a suitcase that met the dimensions to
be a carry on… and a purse, a regular sized purse. My suitcase ended up being searched by the
TSA because an agent for the airline couldn’t believe I would be gone for
almost two months with such a tiny bag.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

free toothpaste in Israel or my deodorant in France (this one actually happened
on previous travels… never buy French deodorant!)? I would have no idea where to buy often
obscure cruelty free toiletries if they are available at all. As it is, I purchase most of my items through

multitask to save space. For example, I packed

facilities for varying prices. Cities
have Laundromats. If you’re traveling
with others, combine your loads and split the cost. Most places offer detergent and dryer sheets,
but they aren’t cruelty free. Shove some Seventh Generation laundry detergent
packs and dryer sheets in your bag. For
reference, I was gone seven weeks and only did four loads. I probably could have gotten away with three
because I used undershirts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">B) As I history person, I was watching a
documentary on British hygiene in Elizabethan England. Their elaborate outer clothes were never or
rarely washed but the white, ruffled underclothes were changed daily. These soaked up all the sweat and protected
the outer clothes. So, I packed a few
tank tops and too thin long sleeved shirts to wear under my clothes. These thin, small garments allowed me to re-wear
clothing more often rather than packing extra bulkier shirts.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

attempts to concoct an at home version failed.
Incidentally I discovered another wonderful and simple hot beverage

staying at a B&B which offered a large selection of tea 24/7. One morning, I brewed up peppermint tea,

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> I
believe I discovered these amazing lipbalms by reading a vegnews article on
must have vegan products. This truly is
a must have product. I purchased the
intensely moisturizing Night Treatment Balm and Black Cherry Tinted Balm. The Night Treatment Balm, on top of being the
most moisturizing lip balm I’ve ever put on my lips, is organic, vegan, and has
a heavenly scent of “blue chamomile vanilla.”
The cherry balm has a nice subtle tint.
I liked to use it while flying because it is moisturizing in the dry,
gross airplane air and helps add a bit of color to my face. Downside:

have finally found my new favorite mascara.
I wore this everyday on my trip and I don’t think I’ll every switch to
another formulation now. It creates a
very Downton Abbey eye by providing obvious definition and lengthening of
lashes while keeping a natural look. It
was pretty easy to build up as well if necessary plus it is amazingly inexpensive. Downside: I'm checking on whether this product is vegan now since a few of its ingredients can be both animal and plant derived. Hello!<br />
<br />
I know my posting schedule is normally rather sporadic, but I'm sure you've noticed a marked decrease in my postings recently. I've been traveling internationally for some time, but now I'm back and ready to start up again. In addition to my regular posts, I will be working on some posts specifically for vegan travel and tips for packing cruelty free for long trips. I will go into specifics of my trip and general tips that will be useful for travel, however long.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'm glad to see this blog hasn't suffered much with my absence, and I will begin posting with vigor int he near future!Rebekahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16548313632344315360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7138459193274497872.post-34573628509266984102012-11-03T10:10:00.001-07:002012-11-03T10:10:49.199-07:00Is Acure Organics Cruelty Free?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
So my hair has been going through a
dry spell lately and I decided it is time to finally try out Moroccan Argan
Oil. After browsing through Vitacost’s
options, I decided to purchase Acure Organics 100% USDA Organic Moroccan Argan
Oil. I sent the following email to
confirm their animal testing policies.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
October 27, 2012:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
“I see your website says that all
Acure Organics products are "free from animal testing," but since the
definition of animal testing seems to vary, I have some additional
questions. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Are the ingredients and/or finished
products tested on animals either by your company or a third party contracted
to animal test on your behalf? Does your
company direct sell to China or any other country which enforces an animal
testing policy? Is Acure Organics a
subsidiary, and if so, does the parent company have the same animal testing
policy?”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
October 28, 2012:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
“We are completely cruelty free and
<b>currently undergoing certification</b>
as such. All ingredients and finished products are cruelty free and manufactured
in our facility in upstate New York. We do not sell direct to China or any
other country. Acure is a brand under Better Planet Brands, 100% cruelty free.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqFWb7odMlpNZQo6ysYICnSka0JHRUpTcpq5CZvm4IshCO8ilc0ZF_oD9NrlE637E-MJtP4LSTAAekWyP9qUtGl9zgW-maQhu0-hz9o6ruj44_sPXdqLsV0jg2aRt1e5ahUFdmoC5z4Ng/s1600/acure-argan-oil-z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqFWb7odMlpNZQo6ysYICnSka0JHRUpTcpq5CZvm4IshCO8ilc0ZF_oD9NrlE637E-MJtP4LSTAAekWyP9qUtGl9zgW-maQhu0-hz9o6ruj44_sPXdqLsV0jg2aRt1e5ahUFdmoC5z4Ng/s320/acure-argan-oil-z.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
I was happy to receive an email
that actually answered each of my questions since many responses I receive gloss
over certain questions or assume that by answering one question they are truly
answering them all. I wish the email had
specified who Acure Organics is receiving cruelty free certification from
since, as I have previously discussed, not all lists are created equally. Hopefully we will see them on Leaping Bunny’s
List soon!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
I did go ahead and purchase from
this brand, but its parent company Better Planet Brands has given me some
pause. While I have found them listed as
fair trade company through <a href="http://www.fairtradeusa.org/products-partners/body-care" target="_blank">this website</a>, the fact that there is no website for
their company is odd to me. The footer
of acureorganics.com states, </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
“Acure Organics is a family owned
and operated company founded on sustainable principles to provide the highest
quality natural, fair trade, and certified organic skin care and personal care
products that are paraben free, cruelty free, sulfate free, USDA organic and
effective.” </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This seems to align with other information I have gathered
since I’ve discovered Kristy Guerra, who is listed as the creator of the Acure
Organics line, and <a href="http://www.corporationwiki.com/Florida/Fort-Lauderdale/hcg-management-llc/36387508.aspx" target="_blank">Jon Guerra</a>, who is listed as manager of Better Planet
Brands.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Overall <b>I feel
comfortable buying from this brand</b> and believe they are truly a cruelty
free, ethically conscious brand in many ways. Depending on how I like my Argan Oil I will seriously considering purchasing more products from Acure Organics.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Dermalogica is the latest in a
string of companies to fumble with its animal testing claims due to relations
with China. Leaping Bunny recently
removed the company from its cruelty free list strictly due to their ties to
the Chinese market. Having used their
products before, I was disappointed to hear about this. I sent Dermalogica an email to get a response
about selling in China and to confirm that this was the only change to their
animal testing policy.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

I have been a happy consumer of Dermalogica products for

test ingredients or finished products? Does Dermalogica hire a third party to
animal test finished products or ingredients on animals? Also, does Dermalogica
direct sell to China or any other country which requires or reserves the right
animal test products sold in the country?”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<b>September 26, 2012</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Thank you for your interest in Dermalogica.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Dermalogica does not, and has never, engaged in animal
testing. We go to great efforts to ensure that our supply chain and ingredient
suppliers uphold our values. We have recently become aware that the Chinese
government now requires animal testing of cosmetic products as part of their
product import registration process. Dermalogica does not condone animal
testing, and is in the process of actively withdrawing our product
registrations and undertaking the necessary actions to suspend our distribution
to the Chinese market. We urge the Chinese government to consider non- animal,
humane forms of safety testing.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
I find it odd that Dermalogica is
claiming they were not aware of China’s animal testing policies. <b>Firstly</b>, because they are a large company
that surely has the capacity to hire lawyers and whoever else to check up on
this for them, and <b>secondly</b> because so many other companies have been very
publicly experiencing the exact same issue recently. However, I have to agree with the prominent
opinion that Dermalogica was so focused on their suppliers not testing that
they lost sight of all other aspects of the cruelty free equation. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<b>I will be emailing Dermalogica
again in the next few months</b> to see what changes have been made since they wrote that they are actively working to
remedy this problem by “withdrawing our product registrations and undertaking
the necessary actions to suspend our distribution to the Chinese market.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
**<b>EDIT</b>: After the debacle in China ans subsequent retraction, Urban Decay is being sold to L'oreal, a brand that no one believes is cruelty free. As of November 2012, Urban Decay will be a subsidiary of L'oreal. Officially and forever black listed.**<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another one
bites the dust! One of the last largest,
mainstream cruelty free companies, Urban Decay, has decided to direct sell to
China. This means their products do not
meet my standards as cruelty free nor Leaping Bunny’s standards. Urban Decay obviously expected a harsh and
massive response to this move and has posted their response <a href="http://www.urbandecay.com/Urban-Decay-China/Urban-Decay-in-China,default,pg.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I have edited down the response below to
highlight what I see as important.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“Urban Decay is going to sell our products in China. Because
of China’s policies on animal testing, we know that this will not be a popular
decision with some of our loyal customers. But the decision is a thoughtful
one. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
…<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For those of you unfamiliar with China’s policies, the
sticking point is this: the Chinese government reserves the right to conduct
animal testing with cosmetic products before the products are approved for use
by Chinese citizens. The government has not told us if they have exercised this
right with our products. So, <b>our brand
does not test on animals, but the Chinese government might conduct a one-time
test using our products</b>. Do we like China’s policies? No…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
we believe that
change cannot and will not happen by outside pressure alone in a closed market.
Change can only happen from within. When we enter the Chinese market, we will
do our part to help make those changes. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When we were considering expanding into China, a group of
marketing consultants told us to remove the section of our company history that
describes our crusade against animal testing. <b>“It doesn’t mean anything to the Chinese beauty customer,”</b> they
said. Of course, …The battleground for animal rights is now in China, and we
want to be there to encourage dialogue and provoke change. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
…<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Based on this, our belief is that both an outside force and
inside pressure for change can result in helping transform both the importance
of women and animal testing policies in China. And more importantly, we hope to
influence the perspective of the citizens on both of these issues. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yes, we are a for-profit company. And yes, we would
eventually like to make money in China. But <b>we don’t stand to turn a profit in China for quite a while</b>,
partially because the market isn’t quite ready to sustain an untraditional brand
like ours. If it were only about the money, we would wait a few years. But our
foray into this market is also about participating in an amazing time of change
in China. We don’t like animal testing (and neither do the 13 dogs in our
office), but we are trying to change the world… even if it is one eye shadow at
a time! Sitting on the sidelines isn’t our style. We understand that you might
not like our decision, but we hope you can respect it.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiE_3HtkcxvSeA1uU_8lqQo-9dMTiinJtORjpoC6bZqYHzVMvryoqUi3rXT3ZhoCXV4cue6vg2SShnb2NXbS3bAN9y0oMV9XKEEJfvzhSHQ5vhigtIoiWBbaq421voKpY97m84HYHyKL0/s1600/ud.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="85" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiE_3HtkcxvSeA1uU_8lqQo-9dMTiinJtORjpoC6bZqYHzVMvryoqUi3rXT3ZhoCXV4cue6vg2SShnb2NXbS3bAN9y0oMV9XKEEJfvzhSHQ5vhigtIoiWBbaq421voKpY97m84HYHyKL0/s320/ud.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div style="text-align: center;">
Urban Decay is loosing their Leaping Bunny and Peta symbols. They created the vegan symbol.</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
First let
me critique Urban Decay’s reasoning that because they are not commissioning the
animal testing, they are blameless. This
is completely faulty logic. If Urban
Decay is so committed to animal welfare (they have built a whole brand around
the phrase “we don’t animal test, how could anyone?) why are they even opening
themselves up to the possibility of animal testing of their products? Because they chose to direct sell to China, I
see this as choosing to animal test because they know this is a likely outcome
of their business relationship with China.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
They could easily choose to sell only
in countries that do not reserve the right to animal test. Then they could sleep comfortably at night
knowing that they did not facilitate a relationship that will facilitate animal
testing, but rather that they have chosen to work with people/countries that do
not require them to dismantle their ethics and make them party to animal
testing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Finally, the fact that UD states
this is the only way to start a cruelty free movement in China and that they
will not be making any money makes me physically ill. It is (pardon me) the biggest load of shit
someone has ever tried to force down my throat.
UD, obviously you will be making money and don’t try to state otherwise
because no one believes that at all.
Also once again your logic is flawed in thinking that abandoning your
animal rights stance will somehow convince others to join this cause. This baffles me completely. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<o:p><br /></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
If you can not tell, UD’s decision to
direct sell to China has elicited an emotional response from many cruelty free
and vegan shoppers. I never purchased
from Mary Kay and Avon, who also decided to direct sell to China, because they
stipulated “unless required by law” in their animal testing policy. I never trusted these companies from the
start. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
But Urban Decay? I trusted them truly. They had built up an identity that rejected
animal testing and even clearly addressed the needs of their vegan shoppers
with their vegan “Marley Approved” paw print to clearly identify all vegan
products. Yes, they did have issues
labeling vegan products correctly at times, but I supposed this was due to bureaucratic
company issues. I’m sad for the animals,
I’m sad that I bought into UD’s branding which I mistook for authentic belief,
and I’m sad for the whole cruelty free movement to lose the last large cruelty company. From now on, I think I will mainly be
sticking to independent companies like Pumpkin and Poppy and other vegan makeup
lines available on etsy.<br />
<br />
Kristy from veggiebeauty posted a great video on this whole situation and the state of animal testing and cosmetics at the moment. She discusses some alternative brands and what we should be looking for. Hopefully this can provide some extra guidance.<br />

Sorry for the overdue post! I’m in my final year of university and franticly racing towards the finish line. I’m attempting to keep up with my self imposed blogging schedule, but it may not run like clock work. Here are some of my recent favorite vegan and cruelty free favorites. Enjoy!</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Darkhorse is on of my favorite colors in the Naked Palette hands down. I’ve replaced my eyeliner with this dark brown, glittery pigment. I am not a huge fan of glitter, but it isn’t very noticeable on. I love eye shadow as a liner (and Darkhorse especially) because it is a much more natural way to make my lashes appear thicker and define my eyes. This color is not sold individually.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span><a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/vegan-chocolate-cake/">This cake</a> is one of the best cakes I’ve had, vegan or non. I handed some slices out on Valentines Day, birthdays, parties and had everyone asking for more. This recipe tastes almost exactly the same as the recipe my grandmother uses to make birthday cakes so I’m glad I can still have a similar cake.</div>

<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Loving Hut is a great Vegan, organic chain restaurant near the animal shelter I volunteer at. I stopped by one day with my omni friend and we both fell in love with their food. The menu varies by location, but at my location the food is Asian inspired with some classics like (vegan) hot dogs, hamburgers, and spaghetti. The USA website is <a href="http://www.lovinghut.us/">here</a> but search for your country’s website as Loving Hut is an international chain.</div>
